Patna: The Patliputra Sports Complex in Patna, once known for its basic facilities and exposure to harsh weather, is now heading towards a major transformation. The Bihar State Sports Authority has prepared a detailed plan to upgrade the complex with modern, international-standard facilities. These changes aim to improve both the training environment for players and the overall experience for spectators, giving a much-needed boost to sports infrastructure in Bihar.
One of the most important changes will be seen in the spectator gallery, especially on the western side of the stadium. A world-class tensile roof will be installed to protect viewers from strong sunlight and rain. Until now, the lack of proper roofing often made it uncomfortable for people to watch matches, particularly during summer and monsoon seasons. Officials say the new roof will allow spectators to enjoy games comfortably in all weather conditions and will also give the stadium a more modern and attractive look.
Athletes will benefit greatly from the renovation of the athletics track. The existing track will be replaced with a pre-fabricated synthetic track built according to world athletics standards. This upgrade is expected to provide runners with a better and safer surface for daily practice. For many athletes in Bihar, this is seen as an important step that will help them prepare more effectively for national and international competitions.
The football ground inside the complex is also being improved. Natural grass will be developed using a proper sprinkler system, and the field will be levelled to ensure smooth play. For a long time, the lack of a good football ground in Patna has been a concern for players and coaches. The renewed field is expected to offer better training opportunities and encourage the growth of football in the state.
In addition to outdoor facilities, work is progressing on a new indoor stadium within the sports complex. Once completed, it will host sports such as kabaddi, basketball, boxing, volleyball, wrestling, table tennis and sepak takraw. The indoor stadium will include basic but essential facilities like changing rooms, washrooms and rooms for coaches, making it easier for athletes to train in a professional environment.
According to Ravindran Shankaran, director general of the Bihar State Sports Authority, the project is not just about improving buildings. He said it reflects a larger vision to strengthen Bihar’s sports culture and support young talent. With better infrastructure and facilities, the Patliputra Sports Complex is expected to play a key role in shaping the future of sports in Bihar.
