Patna: Passengers travelling from Patna’s Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport are finally getting relief from one of the most uncomfortable parts of their journey. The airport has made five aerobridges fully operational, allowing travellers to board their flights directly from the terminal building. This means passengers no longer have to stand in long lines, board crowded buses or walk across the open apron under the hot sun, heavy rain or winter cold. The new system has made boarding smoother, quicker and far more comfortable.
Earlier, the boarding process at Patna Airport was stressful and time-consuming. After completing check-in and security checks, passengers had to wait at bus gates before being taken to the aircraft by shuttle buses. Once they reached the plane, they again had to queue up on the ground before finally entering the aircraft. This often caused delays and inconvenience, especially for elderly passengers, children and those with disabilities. With the introduction of aerobridges, this two-step process has ended, and passengers can now walk straight from the terminal into the aircraft.
The aerobridges are part of several improvements made at the airport over the past year. In June 2025, a new terminal building was opened, spread across more than 65,000 square metres and designed to handle up to 10 million passengers every year. The terminal reflects Bihar’s culture through Nalanda and Madhubani artwork while offering larger waiting areas, better cleanliness, modern lighting, digital flight information displays, free Wi-Fi and improved medical facilities. Special arrangements have also been made for passengers with disabilities.
Other facilities have also added to passenger comfort. A multi-level parking building with space for around 750 vehicles was opened in May 2025 and is connected to the terminal by a travellator. Two executive lounges now offer Wi-Fi, charging points, snacks and newspapers for business and transit passengers. The airport apron has been redesigned to create more aircraft parking bays, increasing the number of flights that Patna Airport can handle each day.
Technology has further simplified the travel experience. The new terminal has automated check-in counters, Digi Yatra gates for contactless entry and inline baggage screening machines that reduce waiting time at security. Together, these changes have transformed Patna Airport, making air travel safer, faster and more comfortable for passengers, and bringing the airport closer to the standards of major Indian cities.
