Patna: A new Domestic Air Cargo Terminal at Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna was inaugurated on Tuesday by K. Selvakumar, General Manager (Cargo), along with officiating Airport Director Umashankar and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security’s Regional Director Rajeev Kumar.

The facility, spanning 3,392 square metres near the airport’s Technical Block, marks a significant upgrade from the previous cargo terminal, which was limited to just 322 square metres and handled only IndiGo’s outbound cargo with an annual capacity of 7,500 metric tonnes. The newly built terminal, constructed at a cost of Rs 8.5 crore, increases handling capacity to 22,000 metric tonnes and allows multiple airlines—including Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Air India Express—to operate cargo services under one roof.

Equipped with modern infrastructure, the terminal features separate spaces for inbound and outbound cargo, a strong room for valuables, temperature-controlled cold storage for perishable goods, and advanced security measures such as X-ray screening, CCTV surveillance, and fire safety equipment. It also includes public amenities such as seating areas and restrooms.

The enhanced cargo facility is expected to improve logistics efficiency in Bihar, particularly benefiting the transport of perishable goods such as litchis and mangoes during peak seasons. Operations at the new terminal will be managed by AAICLAS-RA registered agents, ensuring streamlined cargo movement for airlines and freight operators.
