Patna, September 22: The proposed expansion of the runway at Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport, Patna, has moved forward with a high-level central committee submitting its report to the Bihar government.
The committee has proposed extending the existing 2,072-metre runway by 300 metres to 2,372 metres. The plan also examines the additional land required for the extension and the need to address obstacles in the aircraft approach area.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has also submitted a proposal regarding the land required for the planned expansion.
Why The 300-Metre Extension Is Being Proposed
Patna Airport’s existing runway measures 2,072 metres by 45 metres, according to AAI’s aeronautical information.
The available landing distance is not identical in both directions. The report supplied for this story states that the Landing Distance Available is 1,938 metres in one direction and 1,677 metres in the other.
The new proposal seeks to provide additional runway length while also improving the approach area for aircraft operations.
Extension Proposed Towards Patna Zoo
The proposed expansion is focused towards the eastern side of the airport, in the direction of Patna Zoo.
According to the report, an area of approximately 500 metres in length and 300 metres in width towards the zoo side has been identified as important for the proposed extension and approach-area requirements.
If the proposal moves ahead, the extended runway could reach towards Gate No. 2 of Patna Zoo.
The airport’s proximity to the zoo has been a longstanding factor in runway expansion discussions. Earlier reporting had also identified a portion of the zoo for possible airport expansion.
Land Availability Is A Key Challenge
Several parcels of land have been identified for the proposed runway extension.
The report lists around 22.50 acres of Patna Zoo land, along with land associated with a cemetery, an LJP office, Karpoori Ayurvedic Vatika, government accommodation, SSG Bihar Police and a road.
The Bihar government will now have to consider the availability of the required land and arrangements concerning the properties that could be affected.
Land constraints have been a major issue in efforts to expand Patna Airport. The Union government had earlier noted that limited land availability restricts further expansion of the existing airport.
Approach Area Also Needs To Be Cleared
The proposed expansion is not only about increasing the physical length of the runway.
Buildings, trees and other structures along an aircraft’s approach path also have to meet applicable aviation safety requirements.
The report also mentions the old Secretariat clock tower in the context of structures being examined around the approach area.
This means that making additional land available alone would not complete the expansion process. The surrounding approach corridor would also need to comply with the required aviation standards.
Earlier Plans Proposed A Much Longer Runway
The latest proposal is considerably smaller than some earlier plans.
Previous proposals had considered extending the runway by around 1,584.96 metres, which would have taken the total length to approximately 3,657.6 metres.
That plan did not materialise. The latest committee has instead recommended a more limited 300-metre extension, taking the proposed runway length to 2,372 metres.
What Could A Longer Runway Change?
An additional 300 metres could provide greater operating margin for aircraft during take-off and landing.
Aircraft performance can vary depending on factors such as aircraft weight, temperature and wind conditions. A longer runway can therefore be relevant when assessing aircraft payload and operational limitations.
However, the proposed extension does not automatically mean that larger aircraft or new routes will begin operating from Patna. Such decisions would depend on aircraft performance requirements, airline planning and the necessary regulatory approvals.
Patna Airport Faces Geographical Constraints
Patna Airport’s expansion is complicated by its location in a densely developed part of the city.
The airport is close to Patna Zoo, while other infrastructure and properties also limit the land available for expansion. These geographical constraints have been part of earlier discussions around improving the airport’s runway.
The approach area presents an additional challenge because aviation safety requirements apply not only to the runway itself but also to the space through which aircraft approach the airport.
Bihar Government To Take The Next Decision
With the committee’s technical report now submitted, the next major step concerns the Bihar government’s decision on land availability.
The state will have to consider the proposed use of zoo land, arrangements involving other identified properties and measures required to address obstacles in the approach area.
For now, 2,372 metres remains the proposed runway length. The expansion will depend on decisions relating to land, technical design, affected properties and the necessary aviation clearances.
The proposed 300-metre extension is therefore the latest attempt to improve Patna Airport’s runway capacity while working within the significant geographical constraints surrounding the existing airport.
