Patna: Four people, including a child, were critically injured in a suspected arson attack in Patna City on Wednesday morning, police said. The accused, identified by family members as the victims’ son-in-law, is currently absconding.
The incident took place at a residence in Raja Babu Khatu Shyam Gali under the Patna City area. According to preliminary findings, a combustible substance, suspected to be petrol, was allegedly poured on the victims before they were set on fire following a domestic dispute.
Police said the injured include Purushottam Agrawal, Neelam Devi, Munni Devi and a minor child. All four were admitted to Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH), where doctors described their condition as critical.
Police investigation underway
Patna City SDPO-2 Gaurav Kumar said the family had levelled serious allegations against the son-in-law during the initial inquiry.
“Investigation is being conducted from all angles. CCTV footage from the locality and adjoining lanes is being examined to trace the accused,” the officer said.
A forensic science laboratory (FSL) team was also called to the spot to collect samples and other evidence from the house.
Signs of struggle inside the house
Police officials said the condition of the room suggested there had been a struggle before the incident. Household items were found scattered inside the premises, and investigators also recovered a bag from the room.
The exact sequence of events is yet to be established.
Govind Agrawal, the house owner, said his parents, wife and a child suffered severe burn injuries in the incident.
Rescue efforts hampered by narrow lanes
Residents said flames and smoke were first noticed around 10.30am, prompting neighbours to rush to the house.
The narrow lanes in the locality reportedly delayed rescue efforts, as fire tenders and larger vehicles could not easily access the area. Local residents and police personnel jointly evacuated the injured and shifted them to hospital.
Officials said parts of the house were also damaged in the fire.
