Patna: The garbage dump at Ramchak Bairiya is set to be cleared by May 31 ahead of the monsoon, after civic authorities reviewed the site and flagged lapses by waste-processing contractors.
During an inspection visit on Tuesday, the Municipal Commissioner of the Patna Municipal Corporation expressed displeasure over negligence by two of the three agencies engaged in waste disposal work and issued notices to them. The agencies have been directed to complete clearance of the accumulated waste within the deadline and immediately increase manpower. They were also instructed to deploy additional machinery and processing plants if required to speed up operations.
The action follows recent media reports highlighting problems caused by the massive garbage accumulation in the Ramchak Bairiya area of Patna. Officials said designated work zones for each agency have now been marked to improve efficiency and accountability.
Authorities stated that waste is being treated using the windrow method, a scientific process considered compliant with environmental standards. Agencies have also been given strict instructions for the safe and scientific handling of legacy waste and refuse-derived fuel materials.
To ensure round-the-clock oversight, CCTV cameras will be installed near plants and machinery at the site and linked to the Integrated Command and Control Centre as well as the municipal control room for continuous monitoring. In view of summer conditions, fire hydrants or borewell systems will also be arranged to prevent fire hazards.
A five-member committee has been formed to supervise the work. The panel has been directed to conduct regular inspections and report progress and ground realities directly to the Municipal Commissioner.
