Patna: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Patna, has directed the concerned parties of Amazon to pay a total of Rs 47,990 to a consumer in a dispute involving the return of an Oppo F17 mobile phone.
The order was passed in Consumer Complaint No. 284/2020 and includes compensation for mental agony and litigation expenses in addition to the cost of the mobile phone.
Rs 47,990 Awarded To Consumer
According to Food and Consumer Protection Department, Government of Bihar, the commission directed payment of Rs 17,990 towards the cost of the mobile phone.
It also awarded Rs 20,000 as compensation for mental agony and Rs 10,000 towards litigation expenses, taking the total amount to Rs 47,990.
Return Request Made Within Stipulated Period
The case concerned an Oppo F17 mobile phone for which the consumer had sought a return within the stipulated return period.
The return request was not accepted, leading to the consumer complaint before the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Patna.
After considering the matter, the commission held the conduct to constitute “Deficiency in Service” and “Unfair Trade Practice.”
Amazon Asked To Review Return Policies
Along with the monetary relief, the commission directed Amazon to review its electronics return and “Easy Returns” policies.
The commission said the policies should be made more consumer-friendly and hassle-free, according to the department’s press release.
The direction extends beyond the individual compensation awarded in the case and calls for a review of the return-policy framework applicable to electronics.

The order was passed by Prem Ranjan Mishra, President, and Rajnish Kumar, Member, of the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Patna.
The Food and Consumer Protection Department said the Bihar government remains committed to protecting consumer rights and promoting fair and transparent business practices.
The case highlights the consumer redressal mechanism available for disputes involving purchases, returns and alleged deficiencies in services.
