Patna: A late-night police raid in the Ramkrishna Nagar area of Phulwarisharif turned dramatic on Monday when two alleged cyber fraudsters jumped from the fifth floor of a building after spotting the police, leading to the death of one accused and serious injuries to another.
The deceased has been identified as Sunny Kumar, a resident of Ekangarsarai in Nalanda district. The injured accused, Sonu Kumar from Jandaha in Vaishali district, is undergoing treatment at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH), police said.
According to police officials, the raid was conducted at a house owned by Anil Kumar in Santhua locality under Ramkrishna Nagar police station limits, following specific inputs about cyber criminals operating from the premises. While Anil Kumar and his wife reside on the first floor, the fourth and fifth floor flats had been rented out to the accused.
Police teams first raided the fourth floor, where Anshu Singh alias Virat Singh, Ahsan Ali of Sonepur, Sonu Kumar, and a minor were detained. Investigators said the accused were allegedly involved in cheating people by posing as agents offering treatment at Patanjali Yogpeeth.
Based on their interrogation, police proceeded to the fifth-floor flat, where four more suspects were present. However, sensing police presence, Sunny Kumar allegedly jumped from the window in an attempt to escape. Police said they were alerted after hearing groans from behind the house, where Sunny was found critically injured after landing in water. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Meanwhile, three other accused attempted to flee by tying bedsheets and climbing down from the fifth-floor window. During the escape attempt, Sonu Kumar fell onto the road and sustained serious injuries, while three cyber criminals managed to flee, police added.
During the raid, police recovered 17 mobile phones, 11 debit cards, three laptops, eight notebooks and passbooks of various banks from the two flats. Officials said Anshu Singh is believed to be the kingpin of the gang.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the gang had been operating from the rented flats for nearly six months and had allegedly cheated people across multiple states. Victims were reportedly lured through Google searches and social media by false promises of medical treatment at Patanjali Yogpeeth.
Police said several complaints had already been received against the gang, and the raid was carried out after tracking a mobile number linked to the fraud. Efforts are underway to trace the three absconding accused, while the seized debit cards and bank accounts are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
