Patna: Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan is undergoing a major transformation ahead of the 79th Independence Day celebrations, with preparations in full swing. District Magistrate Dr. Thiyagarajan S.M. inspected the venue on Friday and reviewed arrangements ranging from security to seating, sanitation, and lighting.
The main state function will take place at Gandhi Maidan, which has been divided into four zones, each overseen by senior officers. A robust security network is being put in place, with 1,28 CCTV cameras – including fixed, PTZ, and analytical units – monitoring every inch of the ground and surrounding areas. Surveillance will be backed by a temporary police station, control room, and 18 watch towers.
Lighting has been a key focus, with 1,36 LED metal lights, 2,29 pole lights, and 15 high mast lights illuminating the area. Decorative lights, pathway lighting, and park lights are being maintained and tested to ensure uninterrupted operation on the day. Engineers and technicians will be stationed at key points for technical support.
The District Magistrate has assigned specific responsibilities to various departments, covering barricading, seating, traffic management, medical services, and firefighting. Public health teams will set up multiple temporary medical centres with doctors, trained staff, ambulances, and stretchers. Drinking water arrangements will include water tankers, water ATMs, and operational hydrants.
Traffic management will be handled by the city’s traffic police, with diversions and parking plans to be publicised in advance. Thirteen tableaux are being prepared for display, and rehearsals for the joint parade began on August 1.
The administration has prioritised crowd control, smooth traffic flow, and law-and-order maintenance. “All officers should be alert, ready, and committed,” Dr. Thiyagarajan said, directing that all work be completed promptly to ensure a dignified and safe celebration.
