Patna: Reports of e-rickshaws shutting down unexpectedly have raised concerns among drivers and transport operators in Patna, with mechanics and industry representatives pointing to possible vulnerabilities in Bluetooth-enabled battery management systems.
According to local reports, between 200 and 300 e-rickshaws in Patna and nearby areas have experienced sudden shutdowns over the past few days. The claims have not been independently verified by authorities.
Vehicles Reportedly Stopping Without Mechanical Faults
Drivers initially suspected routine mechanical failures after their vehicles stopped operating while on the road.
However, mechanics investigating the incidents said several affected vehicles showed no signs of conventional mechanical defects, leading to further examination of their battery systems.
Some drivers reported that the vehicles could not be restarted immediately, forcing passengers to continue their journeys by other means.
Bluetooth-Enabled Battery Systems Under Scrutiny
According to industry sources, many modern lithium-ion batteries used in e-rickshaws are equipped with a Battery Management System (BMS) that allows monitoring through Bluetooth-enabled mobile applications.
Concerns have been raised that inadequate security measures, including weak or absent password protection, could leave some systems vulnerable to unauthorised access. However, there has been no official confirmation that such vulnerabilities are responsible for the reported incidents.
Similar Complaints Reported Elsewhere
Reports of unexpected e-rickshaw battery shutdowns have also emerged from other districts in Bihar and several cities across India, according to industry sources.
The extent of the issue and whether the incidents are connected remain unclear.
Recent Incidents Reported In Patna
Drivers said the disruption has continued for several days, affecting daily operations and causing inconvenience to commuters.
On Wednesday, five e-rickshaws belonging to the All Fine company in Patna’s Buddha Colony reportedly stopped functioning after their batteries shut down unexpectedly. The cause of the incident has not been officially established.
Investigation Awaited
No official advisory or investigation findings have yet been released regarding the reported shutdowns.
Experts say manufacturers and authorities may need to examine the security of connected battery systems to determine whether the incidents stem from software vulnerabilities, technical faults or other causes.
