Patna: A Class 12 student was found dead inside a hostel room in Patna late on Saturday night, prompting a police investigation into whether the death was a suicide or the result of foul play.
The incident took place in the Mainpura area under the jurisdiction of Patliputra police station. Officers recovered the body of the student, identified as Roshan Thakur, who was originally from Araria district in Bihar.
According to police, the teenager had been living in the hostel while studying in the city.
Body discovered inside hostel room
Police said the student’s body was found wrapped in a blanket on the floor of the room. Investigators also discovered a saffron-coloured noose hanging from the ceiling fan, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the death.
Images from the room showed basic living arrangements including a bed, a study table and utensils placed on a cot. Food items were also visible in the room. The window and door were reportedly open when the body was found.

Police investigating all angles
Authorities said it remains unclear whether the student died by suicide or if other factors were involved. Police are examining the scene and questioning people connected to the hostel as part of the investigation.
“Every possible angle is being investigated,” officials said, adding that further details would emerge after forensic examination and postmortem reports.
Earlier hostel death cases in Patna
The incident comes after several similar cases reported in Patna hostels in recent years. Investigations are still ongoing in the death of a female student at Shambhu Girls Hostel, which is being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
