Patna: The authorities in Patna are preparing to use technology to tackle illegal parking and haphazard vehicle stoppages that frequently contribute to traffic congestion across the city.

Under the proposed system, vehicles found parked in restricted areas will trigger an automatic alert to the concerned control room. The control room will then contact the traffic personnel deployed in the area and seek information about the action taken.

The system is also expected to monitor the presence of traffic police personnel at designated locations and provide real-time information on traffic conditions and enforcement.

Illegal parking to trigger automatic alerts

If a vehicle is detected in a location where parking is prohibited, the system will immediately send information to the relevant traffic control room.

Officials can then contact the personnel assigned to the area to verify the situation and initiate action where required.

The technology-based approach is intended to make enforcement faster while creating a record of how traffic personnel respond to violations.

Bus stops and auto-rickshaws remain major challenges

Parking and designated stopping arrangements have remained a persistent challenge in Patna.

Modern bus stops have been developed for city service buses after significant expenditure, but the designated stopping system has not been implemented effectively across the city. Buses often stop on the road after spotting passengers instead of using designated locations, adding to traffic pressure.

Auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws have also created unauthorised stopping points at several locations based on convenience.

Despite the deployment of traffic police personnel and officials at various locations, these unregulated stoppages continue to contribute to congestion.

Real-time traffic congestion tracking planned

The Road Construction Department has begun working with the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) on a plan to improve traffic management in the capital.

During the study, irregular stopping by auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws has also been identified as one of the factors contributing to traffic congestion.

The proposed technology will help authorities monitor traffic conditions in different parts of the city and assess the severity of congestion in real time.

It will also help determine whether traffic personnel assigned to specific locations are present at their designated duty points.

Officials to receive immediate action reports

Magistrates and officers at the DSP level have already been deployed in different areas to help manage traffic congestion.

Under the new monitoring system, information about traffic conditions and the response of personnel on the ground will be made available to the concerned officials.

The system is also expected to record what action was taken after the control room received an alert.

This could improve monitoring of illegal parking and unauthorised stopping points while also increasing accountability among personnel responsible for traffic management.

Authorities expect that combining technology-based surveillance with quicker enforcement will help reduce congestion caused by illegal parking and unregulated vehicle stoppages across Patna.
