Patna: Patna Junction, one of Bihar’s busiest railway stations, is set to undergo a comprehensive redevelopment after the Railways approved a Rs 493 crore remodelling project. According to railway officials, work is expected to begin by December 2026, with the project scheduled for completion in 2028.
The redevelopment aims to modernise the station, improve passenger movement and upgrade infrastructure both inside and outside the station premises. Officials said the project will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to railway operations.
Redevelopment
The first phase of the redevelopment will focus on constructing a new parcel building.
According to railway authorities, parcel booking operations will initially be shifted to a temporary shed in the new parking area at Karbigahiya. Once the parcel building is completed, the existing general and reservation ticket counters will be temporarily relocated there.
The current ticket hall and the main station building will then be demolished and rebuilt in phases as part of the wider redevelopment plan.
Wider Foot Overbridge and Better Passenger Access
Improving passenger convenience is a key objective of the project.
Railway officials said the existing foot overbridge will be widened to around twice its current width to ease congestion during peak travel hours. The station will also be equipped with additional escalators and lifts to improve accessibility for elderly passengers, people with disabilities and those carrying heavy luggage.
The upgrades are intended to make movement within the station safer and more efficient as passenger numbers continue to grow.
New Parking Facility Planned
The redevelopment also includes a significant overhaul of the station’s parking infrastructure.
According to the approved plan, a modern parking complex will be developed from the Milk Market area to the Mithapur Road Over Bridge near the General Post Office. Separate parking zones will be created for cars and two-wheelers to improve traffic management.
Officials said the facility will be capable of accommodating more than 4,000 vehicles, a move expected to reduce congestion around one of the city’s busiest transport hubs.
Completed by 2028
Railway authorities expect construction to begin by December 2026 after preparatory work is completed. The redevelopment is scheduled to be completed by 2028.
Once finished, the upgraded Patna Junction is expected to offer improved passenger amenities, better accessibility and more organised traffic management. Railway officials said the phased approach is intended to ensure that train services continue with minimal disruption during construction.
