Patna: Patna Junction is set for a major transformation, with plans underway to remodel the iconic railway station into a modern multiplex and commercial hub at an estimated cost of Rs 500 crore. The survey work for the project has already been completed, and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been sent to the Railway Board for financial approval. Officials expect the clearance by March.
Once approval is granted, the first phase will begin with the construction of a new boundary wall around the station premises. The wall will be nearly 10 feet high. Provisions for the initial phase have already been included in the Union Budget 2026–27 to improve the overall infrastructure of the junction.
Metro Connectivity to Ease City Travel
Patna Junction will also be directly connected to the city’s Metro network, significantly improving access to different parts of the capital. Railway officials said the move will reduce dependence on autos, taxis and buses and make commuting smoother for passengers. The project will be implemented in coordination between the Railways and Metro authorities.
According to officials, similar DPRs and multiplex building models are also being prepared for Danapur, Patliputra Junction and Rajendra Nagar Terminal. Approval for funds for these stations is expected by June.
Restaurants, Mall and Hotel Planned
The multiplex building’s detailed design is being finalised. At Patna and Patliputra Junctions, the underground section will house rooms for railway staff and officers. The upper levels will feature a shopping mall, cinema multiplex, cafeteria, four-star hotel, restaurants, gym and other passenger amenities.
Each platform will be connected through escalators, and water purifier machines will replace regular taps to improve drinking water facilities.
Smart Parking for 2,000 Vehicles
A smart parking facility with space for around 2,000 vehicles will be developed at Patna Junction. At present, parking is poorly managed, leading to frequent congestion as vehicles are left haphazardly.
Under the new system, entry will be strictly regulated. Only those with valid online or offline tickets will be allowed inside through controlled counters at the entrance. A similar smart parking facility will also be introduced at Patliputra Junction.
The redevelopment aims to turn Patna Junction into a world-class transit and commercial hub while easing travel, parking and passenger movement in one of Bihar’s busiest railway terminals.
