Patna: A final-year LLM student at Chanakya Law College was found dead in his hostel room on Tuesday, raising serious questions and prompting a detailed police investigation. The student, Mayank Raj, was originally from the Khalari area of Ranchi district in Jharkhand and had been living in the college hostel while pursuing his postgraduate degree. His sudden death has left the campus community and his family in deep shock.
According to hostel staff, Raj was found hanging inside his room. He was immediately taken down and rushed to Medanta Hospital for treatment. Doctors declared him dead later in the afternoon. Officers from Jakkanpur police station arrived at the scene soon after being informed and began a preliminary inquiry into the circumstances of his death.
A forensic science laboratory team visited the hostel room at around 3pm to examine the scene. During the search, police recovered a handwritten letter, an iPhone, an iPad and identification documents. All items have been seized and sent for forensic testing. Police sources said the letter mentions a personal relationship, and investigators are examining its contents carefully. Digital devices are also being analysed, including call records and chat history, as part of the probe.
Raj’s mother, Madhu Devi, reached the hospital after receiving the news and recorded her statement with the police. She said she did not believe her son could have taken his own life and demanded a fair and impartial investigation. Although she did not accuse anyone directly, she urged authorities to examine every possible angle. Police have registered an unnatural death case and said the investigation is ongoing.
