Patna: The Patna Municipal Corporation marked Makar Sankranti on Tuesday by organising a citywide “Swachhta Bhoj” or cleanliness feast, using the festival as a platform to reinforce the idea that sanitation is a shared social responsibility.
The initiative was held across all municipal zones in Patna and brought together civic officials and sanitation workers. The corporation said the programme was aimed at taking the message of a clean city to every section of society and turning cleanliness into a social habit rather than just a government-led campaign.

Through the event, the civic body sought to highlight that hygiene is not merely an administrative exercise but an essential cultural value. “Cleanliness is not only a mission, but it is also a collective responsibility and a social tradition that must be adopted by everyone,” officials said.
The corporation appealed to citizens to extend the spirit of festivals, which are celebrated with purity, discipline and joy, to their everyday surroundings. Residents were urged to take joint responsibility for keeping their homes, streets, neighbourhoods and the city clean.

The municipal commissioner praised the contribution of sanitation workers, describing them as the backbone of Patna’s cleanliness system. He acknowledged their efforts in maintaining hygiene across the city and said their work deserved greater public recognition.
He added that similar social and cultural initiatives would continue in the future to raise awareness about cleanliness and civic discipline. “Our aim is to develop Patna as a clean, beautiful and healthy city,” he said, stressing that public participation was key to achieving that vision.
The event reflected the corporation’s broader attempt to link traditional festivals with modern civic values, using cultural occasions to strengthen awareness and responsibility towards urban sanitation.
