Patna: The body of a man accused in a multi-crore fraud case was discovered at a city hotel on Wednesday, police said, with officials suspecting suicide.
The deceased, identified as Umesh Singh, 52, a resident of Bindbara in Munger, was found in room number 4 of the Magadh Hotel, located in the Kotwali police station area. Authorities were alerted after hotel staff noticed the room had not been accessed by the occupant for a prolonged period.
“Umesh arrived alone at 12:45 pm on October 17 and had deposited 3,000 rupees for the room,” said Vipin Sharma, a staff member. “On Wednesday morning, when the cleaner arrived, the gate did not open. Police were informed, and upon entering, they found the body.”

Umesh had been evading authorities for several days over allegations of defrauding more than 100 people of approximately 200 crore rupees. According to police, he lured victims by promising a 2% monthly interest on loans. While some payments were initially made, the scheme collapsed over the past three months, prompting complaints and visits from aggrieved lenders.
Further raising suspicions around his disappearance, Umesh’s scooter, clothes, and shoes were found near Dumantha Ghat on October 17. Divers had reportedly been searching the area for several days. A missing person report had been filed at Kasim Bazar police station in Munger following his sudden departure from home.
