Patna: Police in Patna shot and injured a suspected sharp shooter during an early morning encounter on Marine Drive on Sunday, officials said. The accused, identified as Amit Kumar, sustained a bullet wound to his leg after officers returned fire, claiming he opened fire first when they approached him following a tip-off.
Teams from the District Intelligence Unit (DIU), the Town Deputy Superintendent of Police’s office and the Special Task Force (STF) were present at the scene. The stretch of Marine Drive was immediately cordoned off after the exchange. A forensic science team later examined the area and recovered a spent cartridge as part of the investigation.
Kumar, a resident of Vaishali district, is described by police as a “sharp shooter” and a wanted criminal. He was taken to Patna Medical College and Hospital for treatment and is reported to be out of danger. Authorities said he is named in Pirbahore police station case number 76/26 and was allegedly planning a serious offence, possibly a murder, at the time he was intercepted.
Police records link Kumar to an alleged attempt to carry out a killing inside the Patna civil court complex on 27 January 2025. Investigators say he and an associate, Piyush, had intended to target Roshan Tatiya, said to be associated with the Subodh Singh gang, during a scheduled court appearance. Acting on prior intelligence, officers detained Piyush during security checks, while Kumar allegedly managed to flee.
In another recent incident at the same court premises, two armed men were stopped during routine screening. One was arrested, while the other escaped. During questioning, police say the arrested suspect identified the absconding accomplice as Kumar.
Mamta Kalyani, the in-charge superintendent of police, said officers had received specific information that a wanted criminal was near Marine Drive and planning a crime. “When the police team reached the location for verification, he fired at the officers. In self-defence, the police retaliated, and he was injured,” she said. Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
