Patna: The map of Patna’s future transport network is becoming clearer with the rollout of the second phase of the Patna Metro, an entirely underground stretch running from Patna Junction to Rukunpura along Bailey Road. Spanning roughly six to seven kilometres beneath some of the capital’s most congested areas, the corridor is seen as one of the project’s most challenging engineering feats.
The underground line is divided into two segments — Patna Junction to Vikas Bhawan, and Vikas Bhawan to Rukunpura. Tunnelling work in the first section is progressing swiftly, with excavation taking place nearly 100ft below ground.
In a first for Patna, the metro stations along this stretch will feature island platforms, a design in which passengers can board and exit trains travelling in either direction from a single central platform. Officials say the design will ease crowd movement and enhance convenience for commuters.
Six such stations are planned in the underground section: Patna Junction, Vidyut Bhawan, Vikas Bhawan, Patna Zoo, Rajabazar and Rukunpura. According to the Metro Authority, each station is being modelled on global standards for underground transit systems, with full air-conditioning and upgraded passenger amenities. Building an underground line in such densely packed zones poses significant technical challenges, but the project team says the phased approach has enabled steady progress.
🚇 Patna Metro Phase 2: Key Highlights
- 🚧 Second phase now fully underground, running from Patna Junction to Rukunpura beneath the city’s busiest stretch.
- 🛠️ Tunnelling underway 100 ft below ground, progressing rapidly in the first section.
- 🚉 Patna’s first-ever island platforms being built — allowing trains on both sides of a single platform for smoother passenger flow.
- 🌬️ All underground stations to be fully air-conditioned with upgraded passenger amenities.
- 📍 Six underground stations: Patna Junction, Vidyut Bhawan, Vikas Bhawan, Patna Zoo, Rajabazar and Rukunpura.
- 🏗️ Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) handling construction; 36-month deadline for this phase.
- 🛤️ Entire project includes two corridors:
- 🔴 Red Line – 16.86 km
- 🔵 Blue Line – 14.56 km
- 📌 Total stations: 24
- 🚆 Khemnichak and Malahi Pakadi stations nearly ready; expected inauguration by December-end.
- 📈 Metro service soon to extend 6.5 km from ISBT to Malahi Pakadi.
- 🌆 9.35 km underground corridor from Junction to Rukunpura & Mithapur will significantly transform city mobility.
Construction for this phase has been awarded to Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), with a targeted completion period of 36 months. While the first phase was executed under the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited, the second phase is being directly overseen by the Patna Metro Rail Corporation Limited.
When complete, the Patna Metro will operate two corridors — the Red Line (16.86km) and the Blue Line (14.56km) — comprising a total of 24 stations.

Two stations on the elevated corridor, Khemnichak and Malahi Pakadi, are nearly ready and expected to open by the end of December, extending metro service 6.5km from ISBT to Malahi Pakadi via Bhootnath. Civil and structural works at Malahi Pakadi have been completed, while alignment and interior work at Khemnichak is underway.
Meanwhile, a 9.35km underground corridor stretching from Patna Junction to Rukunpura and Mithapur is under construction — a development that officials say will significantly reshape mobility in the growing city.
