Patna: The long-delayed transformation of Patna’s historic Moin-ul-Haq Stadium into an international-level cricket complex is finally set to gather pace, with reconstruction work expected to begin by the end of January, officials said.
Lucknow-based Sivanssh Infrastructure Development Pvt. Ltd has been awarded the contract for the project, which aims to convert the ageing venue into a modern cricket-only complex. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 498.90 crore, with construction scheduled to start within 20 days of the formal agreement being signed with the agency.
The Bihar government has handed over the stadium to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on a 30-year lease, a move intended to ensure professional management and long-term development. Although work was originally slated to begin in January 2025, the project was delayed for nearly a year due to administrative and logistical reasons. The revised timeline now places overall completion around 2029.
Harshvardhan, president of the Bihar Cricket Association (BCA), said a formal foundation stone-laying ceremony for the reconstruction would take place in January 2026. He added that the redeveloped complex would be fully dedicated to cricket and would include two separate cricket grounds.
Plans for the new stadium include a seating capacity of 40,000 spectators, modern dressing rooms, separate facilities for home and visiting teams, and high-performance infrastructure such as a gym, spa, physiotherapy unit and dedicated dining areas. The complex will also feature an indoor cricket facility for off-season training, practice nets, tennis courts, a video analysis room, and spaces for conferences, seminars and workshops.
Beyond cricket, the blueprint includes badminton and volleyball courts, a five-star hotel and a modern hostel for players, reflecting ambitions to turn the venue into a comprehensive sports and training hub.
The main ground will be fitted with a sand-based drainage system designed to allow rapid rainwater drainage and reuse, improving playability during the monsoon. Spread across 31.25 acres, the complex will first see the construction of a boundary wall, with four main gates providing separate entry and exit routes. A dedicated cricket academy is also planned within the complex.
Once completed, the redevelopment of Moin-ul-Haq Stadium is expected to restore Patna’s place on India’s cricketing map and provide a long-term boost to the sport in Bihar.
