Patna: A 20-year-old woman died after reportedly jumping from the roof of a rented house in Patna’s Nayatola locality late on Monday, police said. The woman, identified as Anamika, originally from Ekma in Saran district, was taken to a nearby hospital by her boyfriend and local residents, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Police detained her boyfriend, Abhiraj Kumar Arya, for questioning and took the body into custody for postmortem. Officers said they contacted the woman’s family in Saran, but no relatives arrived to claim the body through the day. After the postmortem, police handed over the body to Abhiraj.
Abhiraj, a resident of Laxman Dumri in Siwan, told police he had met Anamika at his maternal home in Ekma. He said the two had been in a relationship for several years and had run away together four years ago. The couple had been living in Nayatola for the past few months.
He told officers that he had recently opened a small shop and was at work on Monday when his landlord called, informing him that Anamika had fallen from the roof. “I rushed back and found her lying outside the house,” he said. With the help of neighbours, he took her to hospital.
Abhiraj said the couple had not quarrelled and had been preparing paperwork for a court marriage. “I do not know how this happened,” he told police.
Station House Officer Prashant Kumar Bhardwaj confirmed the death and said an investigation is under way. “A young woman living on rent in Nayatola has died after jumping from the rooftop. A postmortem was conducted. Her family was informed but did not come. The body was handed over to her partner,” he said.
Police say they are examining all angles, including statements from the landlord and neighbours, to establish the sequence of events leading to the woman’s death.
