Patna: Patna is set to revamp its Ganga riverfront, with plans underway to develop an eight-kilometre stretch from Digha to Didarganj into a modern public space. The Patna Municipal Corporation is preparing a detailed project report (DPR), which will be discussed at the next meeting of the city’s empowered standing committee.
The proposed project envisions pedestrian walkways, green spaces, seating areas, lighting, and basic amenities aimed at both residents and tourists. Officials hope the development will shift the riverfront from a site largely associated with religious activities to a vibrant urban attraction.
“The stretch from Nauzar Katra to Didarganj has immense historical and religious significance, featuring ghats such as Khajekalan, Mirchai, Kangan, Teri, Kila, Pirdamaria, and Didarganj,” said a municipal corporation spokesperson. “Developing all the ghats together as a connected riverfront will reinforce the area’s identity while offering modern recreational facilities.”
Recent improvements at Kangan Ghat have already made it a popular destination, and city planners aim to extend this appeal across the full stretch. The DPR will be submitted to state and central authorities for approval and funding, with a meeting scheduled including the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Municipal Commissioner to finalise plans.
City officials expect the project to boost tourism, generate local employment, and create opportunities for small businesses and food stalls along the riverfront. In recent years, areas such as JP Ganga Path and Marine Drive have become major recreational hubs for Patna residents. The new development could become another landmark, combining the city’s historical connection to the Ganges with modern urban design.
If approved, the initiative will provide a scenic, accessible, and culturally rich riverfront, transforming Patna’s relationship with one of India’s most iconic rivers.
