Patna: In a unique initiative to combat plastic waste and promote a culture of cleanliness, the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has introduced a new program that rewards citizens for recycling. Through the installation of Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) across the city, people can now deposit used plastic bottles and carry bags to earn “green points” and coupons that can be redeemed online or in stores.
Municipal Commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar announced that five RVMs will be installed in the initial phase. These machines will be located at prominent spots, including two on JP Ganga Path, and one each at the Moyalok Complex, Gate No. 1 of Patna Zoo, and the Boring Road intersection. The maintenance and operation of these RVMs will be handled by M/s Biocrux Private Limited.
The RVMs are designed for a seamless user experience. A person deposits a plastic bottle or bag, enters their mobile number, and the machine provides a reward. One green point will be awarded for each bottle, and a coupon will be issued for every five points accumulated. These points and coupons will be stored in an account linked to the user’s mobile number, allowing them to be used like cash for purchases. The RVMs are also equipped with a crusher that instantly compresses the bottles, saving space and making the recycling process more efficient.
Arvind Kumar, a solid waste management expert with the corporation, highlighted the environmental benefits of this new system. The initiative is projected to prevent the emission of up to 42 tons of carbon dioxide annually, save 700 liters of fuel, and conserve 52,000 liters of water through recycling.
The system is transparent and uses Internet of Things (IoT) technology, which enables online tracking and monitoring of the collected waste, reinforcing the corporation’s commitment to building a cleaner and more sustainable city.
