Patna: Sub-Inspector Pravesh Kumar, posted at Dhanarua police station in Patna district, was suspended with immediate effect after a video went viral showing him soliciting a bribe. According to the footage, Pravesh visited a grocery shop in Bansbigha village on January 20, 2025, and asked for Rs 30,000 to drop charges against a relative of the shop owner.
The video shows the woman pleading that her family was poor and falsely implicated, but Pravesh allegedly insisted on the payment. She initially handed over Rs 5,000 and later another Rs 5,000, with the balance to be paid later. The officer was also heard asking for money for his driver, pressing the woman to give Rs 1,000 despite her protests.
The footage, suppressed for months, resurfaced recently on social media, prompting swift action. The City East SP confirmed Pravesh’s suspension and said the video evidence is under investigation.
The woman, identified only as Sangeeta Devi, said she went public out of frustration, claiming that repeated pressure from the officer left her no choice but to release the footage.
