Patna: The Patna Municipal Corporation has launched a special drive to expand the property tax base and improve revenue collection. Under the initiative, revenue officials will conduct door-to-door property re-assessments to verify whether existing tax assessments match the actual status of properties.
The exercise is also intended to identify discrepancies in property assessments and make the process of resolving tax-related issues easier for residents.
Residents Can Opt For Self-Assessment
Property owners can complete self-assessment from home if a new floor has been added to a building or if the category of the road connected to the property has changed.
Where necessary, residents can also request a municipal official to visit their property and carry out the assessment. The facility is aimed at making property tax-related services more accessible and reducing dependence on intermediaries.
19 Zones Set Up Across The City
The municipal administration has divided the entire corporation area into 19 zones, with a zonal head assigned to each zone.
The corporation is also preparing to make the mobile numbers of revenue officers in different municipal circles public. The move is expected to help residents contact officials directly regarding assessment and property tax-related complaints.
5,580 Self-Assessments Recorded
According to municipal data, 5,580 people completed self-assessment between April 1 and September 17. Of these, 3,673 have already paid their property tax.
The corporation is now widening the verification exercise to identify properties where the existing tax assessment may not correspond to the actual construction, area or use of the property.
Patliputra Records Highest Assessment
Among the six municipal circles listed in the data, Patliputra recorded the highest number of assessments at 1,385. Tax payments have been completed for 881 of these properties.
Nutan Rajdhani recorded 1,217 assessments, with 793 payments. Azimabad had 964 assessments, of which 676 resulted in tax payments.
Kankarbagh recorded 938 assessments and 623 payments. Bankipur had 563 assessments, with 356 payments, while Patna City recorded 513 assessments and 344 payments.
Malls, Hospitals And Other Large Properties To Be Checked
The corporation has also formed a specialist team to examine property tax assessments involving large commercial and other major properties.
On the direction of Municipal Commissioner Yashpal Meena, the team comprises five town planners and two architects. It will inspect major malls, market complexes, banquet halls, hospitals and vacant plots.
Approved Plans To Be Compared With Actual Construction
During inspections, the specialist team will use modern equipment to compare approved building plans with the actual construction and area found at the site.
The verification will help the corporation determine whether the property tax assessment corresponds with the property’s actual built-up area and use.
If discrepancies are detected, officials will prepare reports supported by photographs and videos. The corporation may subsequently revise the property tax assessment and impose penalties in accordance with applicable rules.
