Patna: A free screening camp to detect sarcopenia – a condition marked by the gradual loss of muscle strength – was held on Thursday at Dr Diwakar Tejaswi Clinic in Patna’s Exhibition Road, under the banner of Public Awareness for Healthy Approach for Living (Pahal).
Speaking at the event, Pahal’s medical director and senior physician, Dr Diwakar Tejaswi, warned that untreated sarcopenia could lead to balance problems, frequent falls, bone fractures, difficulty performing daily tasks, weakened immunity, fatigue and premature ageing. “This condition seriously affects the quality of life,” he said.
According to test results from the camp, 70% of women and 50% of men screened showed reduced hand grip strength – a clear sign of muscle weakness. Dr Tejaswi said such weakness often stems from ageing, poor diet, low physical activity and certain chronic illnesses.

He advised preventive measures including a balanced diet rich in protein, vitamin D and calcium, daily exercise combining strength training and walking, regular sunlight exposure, and avoiding smoking and alcohol. “If you notice weakness or loss of muscle strength, consult a doctor in time,” he added.
Dr Tejaswi urged attendees to prioritise muscle health, adopting the principle that “physical strength is the real capital of health.”
