Patna: Patna’s drainage infrastructure has received a boost ahead of the monsoon, with two new sewage pumping stations (SPS) developed by Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (BUIDCO) completing successful trial runs.
The facilities are expected to improve wastewater management and help reduce waterlogging in localities including Rajiv Nagar, Boring Road, SK Puri, Anandpuri, Pataliputra, Atal Path and surrounding areas.
Stations to become operational during monsoon
According to officials, both pumping stations are prepared for continuous operation during the monsoon season and are expected to function regularly from June 15 onwards.
BUIDCO Managing Director Animesh Kumar Parashar has directed officials to ensure uninterrupted drainage operations and maintain contingency arrangements for periods of heavy rainfall.
Interception and diversion technology used
The projects have been developed using the interception and diversion model, under which wastewater from existing drains is diverted directly to a sewage treatment plant without extensive road excavation.
Officials said the approach helped reduce construction time and costs while minimising disruption to urban traffic and public movement.
Rajiv Nagar station to handle large wastewater volumes
The newly constructed sewage pumping station at Rajiv Nagar has a capacity of 103 million litres per day (MLD).
During trial operations, the facility met technical performance benchmarks related to pumping efficiency, pressure management and flow regulation.
The station will collect and transfer wastewater from Rajiv Nagar, Kurji and nearby localities to the Digha Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).
Anandpuri drain linked to new pumping facility
A second pumping station has been constructed near the AN College water tank area.
The facility will divert approximately 30 MLD of wastewater from the Anandpuri drain to the Digha STP, improving drainage conditions in Anandpuri, Rajiv Nagar and adjoining neighbourhoods.
Increased utilisation of Digha STP
Wastewater from both pumping stations will be treated at the Digha Sewage Treatment Plant, which has a total capacity of 100 MLD.
Officials said the plant had previously been treating around 40–50 MLD of wastewater on average. With the commissioning of the new pumping infrastructure, treatment volumes are expected to increase to between 70 and 80 MLD.
The initiative is also expected to improve the quality of water discharged into the Ganga by increasing the proportion of treated wastewater.

Officials said the upgraded infrastructure forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Patna’s sewerage and stormwater management systems ahead of the rainy season.
