Patna: Patna will finally have its first international-level astro turf hockey ground by the end of September. This ground is being built at the Physical Education College campus in Rajendra Nagar. Most hockey players from Bihar have to go outside the state for practice, but now they will be able to train in Patna itself.
The foundation stone of this ground was laid in 2011 by then minister Sukhda Pandey on Teachers’ Day. It was supposed to be completed by 2013, but due to delays, it is still under construction. Many national-level players from Bihar have retired without getting the chance to practice on an astro turf ground in their own state.
The new stadium will have a hockey academy, training centre, and warm-up ground. Flood lights will be installed for night practice, and coaches will be appointed for better training. Next to the hockey ground, a 200-metre football ground is also being built to support sports activities.
Bihar’s first astro turf hockey ground was built at Rajgir Sports Complex, and the second one there is also nearing completion. Officials hope that with this new ground, Patna’s players can practice better and represent Bihar at national and international levels without leaving their hometown.
