Patna: Patna Police have been actively enforcing traffic rules, issuing fines worth Rs 46.5 crore between January and August 2025. Most of these fines were imposed on two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmets, highlighting ongoing negligence by residents despite repeated awareness campaigns.
Other major traffic violations also contributed to the total fines. About 24,000 people were penalised for driving on the wrong side of the road, with fines amounting to Rs 5.40 crore. Over 20,000 motorists were fined for overspeeding, bringing in Rs 4.10 crore. In addition, 79,000 vehicles were found parked in no-parking zones, resulting in fines of Rs 4.40 crore.
However, compliance with traffic rules remains a challenge. Officials report that around 75 percent of offenders have not paid their fines. Those who fail to pay face strict consequences: their vehicle insurance and pollution certificates will not be renewed, and repeated violations may lead to heavier fines or even confiscation of their vehicles.
To enforce rules more effectively, the traffic police have installed CCTV cameras at various locations across the city. Traffic Superintendent Aparajit Lohan said the department regularly sends reminders to offenders via SMS and registered post. “We urge residents to pay their fines on time and follow traffic rules to avoid penalties and ensure road safety,” he said.
Authorities hope that consistent enforcement and public awareness will help reduce accidents and improve traffic discipline in Patna.
