Patna: A police encounter took place near a GAIL CNG petrol pump in Patna’s Transport Nagar area on Monday, leaving one alleged criminal injured and another in custody, officials said.
According to police, the operation was linked to the May 13 robbery and shooting of school teacher Shambhu Kumar, who was attacked while travelling to school duty.
Police say accused opened fire during operation
Police said a special investigation team (SIT) had been formed following the attack on the teacher and raids were being conducted to trace the accused.
Acting on a tip-off that the suspects were hiding in the Transport Nagar area, police launched a search operation and surrounded the locality.
Officials said the accused attempted to flee and allegedly opened fire at the police team. During the exchange, the windshield of a police vehicle was damaged.
Police retaliated, injuring one of the accused, identified as Sandeep alias Badal, in the leg. Another suspect, identified as Prince, was arrested from the spot.
Weapons and motorcycle recovered
Police said a motorcycle and firearms allegedly used in the earlier incident were recovered from the accused.
Preliminary investigation suggests that both men were directly involved in the robbery and shooting of the teacher, officials said.
According to police records, the accused have previous cases registered against them, including robbery, murder and other serious offences. Police said efforts are under way to identify and arrest other alleged associates connected to the case.
Teacher was shot during robbery attempt
Patna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Kartikeya Sharma said the action was carried out on the basis of technical evidence and intelligence inputs.
“The teacher was on his way to school duty in the early hours of May 13, when two motorcycle-borne assailants attempted to rob him. When he resisted, they opened fire, injuring him with two bullets,” Sharma said.
The injured accused is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital, police added. Investigation into the case is continuing.
