Patna: Patna is preparing to introduce a water metro service on the Ganga, with the first electric vessel expected to arrive from Kolkata by September 16, just weeks before the Bihar assembly elections are announced. Officials say the service will provide a modern, sustainable transport alternative for commuters and tourists, complementing the city’s expanding network of roads, bridges and the upcoming Patna Metro rail.
The first ship, built by Kochi Shipyard Limited in Kerala, can seat 50 passengers in an air-conditioned cabin powered entirely by electricity. A second vessel equipped with similar facilities will follow by the end of the month. “This service will not only ease traffic but also promote tourism along Patna’s ghats,” said Arvind Kumar, Director of the Inland Waterways Authority of India at Gaighat, noting that the project is being fast-tracked under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
In its initial phase, the Rs 1,200 crore scheme will operate between Digha and Kangan Ghat, covering a 20km stretch of the Ganga with stops at Gandhi Ghat, Gaighat and NIT Patna. Ports at Gandhi Ghat and Gaighat are already complete, while a floating jetty at Kangan Ghat will soon be installed. Charging stations are planned at Digha and Gandhi Ghat, with provisions for solar-powered upgrades in future.
If successful, the service could expand further, with larger 100-seat vessels and routes reaching Gandak, Sonpur, Hajipur, Danapur and Didarganj. Officials also expect the scheme to boost green mobility and provide a new vantage point for experiencing Patna’s riverfront.
