Patna: Marking National Handloom Day, the Department of Fashion Designing, in collaboration with the Department of Home Science, Patna Women’s College (Autonomous), organised ‘SUTRADARA – The Handloom Ramp Walk’ on August 7 to celebrate India’s rich handloom heritage and encourage sustainable fashion practices among students.
The event was held under the guidance of Dr. Shemushi Madhu, Head of the Department of Fashion Designing, Dr. Geetanjali Choudhary, Coordinator, and Dr. Shazia Husain, Head of the Department of Home Science.
Celebrating Tradition Through Contemporary Fashion
The programme combined creativity, innovation and experiential learning, offering students an opportunity to explore traditional handloom textiles through modern design concepts.
The highlight of the event was a three-round ramp walk showcasing different interpretations of Indian handloom traditions.
Three-Themed Ramp Walk Showcased Student Creativity
The opening round, ‘Grameen Glam’, featured innovative garments created using Bihar’s iconic Gamchha, emphasising sustainability, rural craftsmanship and the creative use of indigenous textiles.
The second round, ‘Indo-Western’, presented fusion ensembles that blended traditional handloom fabrics with contemporary Western silhouettes, reflecting evolving fashion trends while preserving traditional craftsmanship.
The final round, ‘Saree Draping’, showcased both regional and contemporary draping styles, highlighting the saree as a timeless symbol of India’s living textile heritage.
Experiential Learning at the Core
The event provided students with a practical platform to apply classroom concepts related to handloom textiles, garment construction and fashion design through live presentations.
Around 90 students participated in the programme, demonstrating their creativity and design skills while promoting awareness of sustainable fashion and India’s handloom traditions.
Faculty Extend Support
Faculty members from both the Department of Fashion Designing and the Department of Home Science attended the event and extended their support, contributing to its successful organisation.
