Patna: Patna Zoo is preparing to bring back its toy train after nearly 11 years, with operations targeted to begin in January 2027. The railway survey for the project has been completed, and the route for laying the tracks has been marked.
Preparatory work has included clearing bushes along the proposed route and removing the old railway tracks. The laying of new tracks is expected to begin within a week, according to the available information.
The revival is expected to offer visitors, particularly children, another way to explore the zoo.
New Track Route Planned to Protect Trees
Preserving the zoo’s greenery has been a key consideration in planning the new toy train route. The zoo management conducted another survey before finalising the alignment to minimise damage to trees, including kusum trees.
Under the revised plan, the tracks will run alongside trees rather than through areas that could put them at risk. The approach aims to balance the train’s operation with the conservation of the zoo’s existing green cover.
Track Design Posed Technical Challenges
One of the major challenges during the planning stage was identifying sufficient space for the train to negotiate turns. The route required bends of approximately 60 degrees, and space constraints at four locations reportedly complicated the process.
A fresh survey was conducted to address these issues and finalise the alignment. The route has since been marked for track-laying work.
Train to Be Manufactured in Samastipur
The new toy train will be manufactured at the railway workshop in Samastipur, which has also been assigned responsibility for preparing its design.
The train is planned to feature a look inspired by the Vande Bharat Express. It will comprise one engine and four coaches.
According to the available information, the tendering process for its construction has been completed. Some sections of the old railway track will also be reused as part of the project.
Why Was the Toy Train Discontinued?
The toy train operated at Patna Zoo until 2015 but was discontinued following repeated incidents of derailment.
The new project involves preparing the track afresh before restarting operations. If the current timeline is maintained, visitors will be able to enjoy the attraction again from January 2027.
Its return after nearly 11 years is expected to add another recreational option for families visiting one of Patna’s popular attractions.
