Patna: The Bihar government has announced a major plan to expand higher education across the state. Chief minister Nitish Kumar said that degree colleges will soon be opened in all the 213 blocks where there is currently no college. These new colleges will start classes from July 2026. The aim is to make higher education easily available to students, especially those living in rural and remote areas who find it difficult to travel far for studies.
The chief minister shared this information through a post on social media platform X. He said this decision is part of the government’s “Seven Resolves-3” programme, under the theme “Advanced Education – Bright Future”. At present, Bihar has 534 blocks, but 213 of them do not have any affiliated or constituent degree college. Because of this, many students are forced to drop out after school or move to other towns, which is not possible for everyone.

Nitish Kumar said he has directed officials to begin work immediately so that all the new colleges can be ready to start teaching by July 2026. He explained that this move will be especially helpful for girls, who often face social and safety issues when travelling long distances for higher education. Having a college nearby will make it easier for families to allow their daughters to continue their studies.
The government is also planning to upgrade Bihar’s old and well-known educational institutions. A total of 55 such colleges and universities will be developed as “Centres of Excellence”. These institutions will be modernised and equipped with better facilities, updated courses and skilled teachers. Officials have also been told to take suggestions from experienced teachers and students before making changes.
According to the chief minister, opening colleges in every block and improving old institutions will help Bihar’s youth get job-oriented education and better career opportunities. He said this will strengthen the state’s education system and play an important role in Bihar’s social and economic development.
