Patna: Bihar has taken a significant step towards strengthening its power sector, with the state signing a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a 185 MW solar project with battery storage in Lakhisarai district. The agreement, signed by Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited, is part of a broader push that has seen around Rs 50,000 crore invested in the state’s energy infrastructure, according to the State’s Energy Minister, Bijendra Prasad Yadav.
Speaking at the signing ceremony in Patna on Wednesday, Bijendra Yadav described the development as a historic moment for Bihar. He said the Kajra solar project would help ensure uninterrupted electricity supply while supporting India’s climate commitments. “This project is not just about electricity, but about inspiring a green future and protecting future generations,” he said, emphasising the role of solar energy in reducing global warming.
The event also saw the release of a booklet titled The Power Year 2025 – Bihar Energy Highlights, documenting key achievements in the state’s power sector. Senior officials said the agreement would accelerate commercial operations and strengthen Bihar’s move towards energy self-reliance. Manoj Kumar Singh, Energy Secretary and Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited, called the signing an important milestone that would pave the way for further expansion and grid stability.
The Kajra project’s first phase, combining 185 MW of solar generation with 282 MWh of battery storage, has already been connected to the grid, less than 18 months after the work order was issued. A second phase, currently under construction, will add 116 MW of solar capacity and 241 MWh of battery storage at an estimated cost of Rs 1,055 crore. By January 2027, the plant’s total capacity is expected to reach 301 MW of solar power and 523 MWh of storage, helping Bihar manage peak demand and stabilise its electricity grid.
