Patna, September 25: The Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) has increased the bed capacity of its medicine emergency from 60 to 105 beds to accommodate the growing number of critically ill patients.
The additional 45 beds were inaugurated on Thursday in the presence of Health Department Secretary Kumar Ravi, Bihar Medical Services and Infrastructure Corporation Limited (BMSICL) Managing Director Subrata Sen and PMCH Superintendent Dr Rajiv Kumar Singh.
The hospital has also started an indoor ward of the medicine department in the new Block 2 building. The emergency and indoor services of the department are now located in the same area.
More Than 150 Serious Patients Arrive Daily
The medicine department is among the busiest units at PMCH, receiving patients with conditions including fever, dengue, malaria, typhoid, pneumonia, respiratory illnesses and other serious infections.
According to hospital officials, more than 150 seriously ill patients arrive at the department every day. The earlier shortage of beds often made it difficult to admit patients, with some having to remain in the emergency area on stretchers or other temporary arrangements.
The additional beds are expected to provide more space for patients requiring admission and treatment.
Capacity Could Reach 200 Beds
PMCH Superintendent Dr Rajiv Kumar Singh said the hospital plans to increase the bed capacity of the medicine department and related services to around 200 beds once the fourth building becomes available.
The expansion is part of the hospital’s broader effort to increase its capacity as patient numbers continue to rise.
Super Specialty Hospital Targeted For November 20
PMCH has also set a target of November 20 for completing its super specialty hospital.
According to the hospital superintendent, the major construction work has already been completed. However, electricity connections, air-conditioning installation and some finishing work are still pending.
Health Department Secretary Kumar Ravi directed the construction agency to complete the remaining work within the stipulated timeline.
The pending works are being taken up on priority so that the facility can be made ready by the November deadline.
