Patna : A severe heatwave gripping the state has sparked concerns of widespread power shortages in the coming months, with grid operators warning of a potential electricity crisis in May and June.

According to the National Load Dispatch Centre (NLDC), peak power demand this summer is expected to soar to 270 gigawatts (GW), significantly higher than last year’s 250 GW. The soaring temperatures—already reaching 36°C in some areas—are driving a surge in electricity consumption as households and businesses ramp up the use of fans, coolers, and air conditioners.

The NLDC report warns that around one-third of the country’s electricity needs may go unmet in May, with a shortfall of up to 20% expected in June. The crisis is anticipated to be particularly acute during non-solar energy hours, as the gap between demand and supply typically exceeds 15 GW between May and July.

To mitigate the crisis, the NLDC has suggested accelerating the development of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. It also recommended increasing coal-based power generation capacity and encouraging industrial and commercial consumers to shift power usage to non-peak hours.
