Patna: Renowned spiritual leader Premanand Maharaj, who has been battling polycystic kidney disease for nearly two decades, is reportedly recovering after a recent deterioration in his health. The 71-year-old guru, who previously required dialysis seven days a week, has now returned to his usual five-day schedule, according to sources close to his ashram.
Since October 2, Maharaj has been unable to continue his daily padayatra — a ritual morning walk central to his spiritual practice — due to fatigue and health complications. The ashram has assured devotees that he remains under medical supervision and is in stable condition, though he has been advised extended rest.
Premanand Maharaj was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) around 2006. PKD is a genetic disorder that causes clusters of fluid-filled cysts to develop within the kidneys, gradually impairing their function. The National Kidney Foundation notes that PKD can lead to serious complications including kidney failure, high blood pressure, and chronic pain.
For Maharaj, dialysis has become a vital part of life. The treatment replaces kidney function by filtering toxins and excess fluids from the blood — a process essential for survival when kidneys can no longer perform their normal role. Without it, patients with kidney failure can suffer life-threatening toxin buildup.
Globally, more than 2 million people depend on dialysis or kidney transplants for survival. In India, hemodialysis is the most common form of treatment — a procedure that cleanses the blood through an external machine known as a dialyzer. Patients typically undergo this process three times a week, but Maharaj’s condition requires more frequent sessions.
Despite the physical challenges, Premanand Maharaj continues to offer limited spiritual guidance to his followers. His disciples say his resilience and devotion continue to inspire millions who look to him for spiritual strength.
While his padayatra remains suspended indefinitely, devotees across India have been offering prayers for his long-term recovery. For now, the ashram has urged followers to focus on his message of inner peace and endurance — values that Maharaj himself continues to embody in the face of chronic illness.
