Patna: A prisoner escaped from police custody on Monday while being presented at Patna Civil Court, marking the second such incident in less than two months. The accused, identified as Surendra Kumar alias Chhotu, fled by slipping out of his handcuffs and leaving his slippers near the police van.
Kumar, a native of Nawada currently residing in Phulwari Sharif, had been arrested in a theft case and was lodged in Beur jail for the past six months. He was brought to court for a scheduled hearing before the ACJM-4 court when he managed to escape during the transfer from the lockup.
Town ASP-1 Mohibullah Ansari confirmed the incident, stating that although a formal FIR had not yet been registered, a search operation was underway. A constable has submitted a written complaint at Pirbahor police station regarding the escape.
This is the second such case at the same court complex in recent weeks. On 18 June, another prisoner, identified as Vikas from Paliganj, escaped custody by breaking a window grill. He had entered the bathroom on the pretext of defecation and fled while officers held his rope outside. His disappearance was discovered nearly half an hour later.
