Patna: Continuous heavy rainfall across approximately a dozen districts in Bihar has led to severe waterlogging and a flood-like situation, with Banka district reporting record-breaking downpours not seen in 30 years. The persistent rain has disrupted daily life, submerged key infrastructure, and caused at least two fatalities.
The situation is particularly dire in Banka, where the heavy rainfall has broken a 30-year record, creating a flood-like scenario reminiscent of 1995. The downpour caused a dam to break, leading to widespread flooding of agricultural fields and extensive damage to crops.
In Buxar, the heavy rain has caused tributaries of the Ganges to swell, inundating villages. In Banarpur village, river water has filled streets and neighborhoods, forcing residents to navigate with boats. With houses submerged in up to three feet of water, many families have been forced to cook meals on their rooftops. The state highway in Buxar is also under more than three feet of water, leading authorities to ban vehicular traffic.
The Ganga river is flowing above the danger mark in Begusarai, although no villages have been flooded yet. In Lakhisarai, the Sadar Hospital was waterlogged, causing inconvenience for patients and staff. Commuters in Samastipur are facing significant challenges after a diversion near the Bhadoghat bridge was washed away by the heavy rains.
Other districts including Patna, Siwan, Motihari, and Darbhanga have also experienced continuous rainfall. Purnia district recorded its highest single-day rainfall in five years on Sunday. The incessant rain has also been linked to a tragic incident in Siwan, where a father and daughter were killed after a wall collapsed.
