Patna: Bihar is set to get another airport as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has approved the construction of a terminal building at Purnia airport. The move follows Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s visit to the district during the third phase of his Pragati Yatra, where he announced development projects worth Rs 581 crore and directed officials to expedite work on the long-pending airport.
Terminal Construction Approved at Lower Cost
AAI has awarded the tender for the terminal building at a total cost of Rs 33.99 crore—23% less than the estimated Rs 44.15 crore. The bidding process, which began in September 2024, is now in its final stages, and construction is expected to begin soon.
Modern Airport With State-of-the-Art Facilities
Designed by AAI architects, the new terminal will incorporate modern amenities and is planned to handle passenger traffic for the next 30 to 40 years. The airport will feature five aerobridges to improve connectivity.
Interim Terminal for Early Operations
To expedite flight services, an interim terminal will be constructed under the porta concept before the main terminal is built. AAI has appointed a Deputy General Manager (Engineering) as the project in-charge, and the contractor has been directed to ensure timely completion. The construction agency will also be required to deposit a performance guarantee of Rs 1.69 crore and a security fund of Rs 88.30 lakh, with strict compliance to labour laws.
Regional Boost to Connectivity and Economy
The Purnia airport is expected to enhance air connectivity not just for Bihar but also for West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Nepal. Once operational, it will provide easier travel options for residents of Seemanchal and Kosi regions and boost economic development in the area.
