Darbhanga: Pushpam Priya Choudhary, head of The Plurals Party, has alleged that she and her party workers were attacked by local goons linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Darbhanga, her home district. Posting on X, Choudhary said she narrowly escaped the incident.
“I’ve just come home after escaping the goons of the MLA and Minister of Darbhanga for 20 years. I can’t believe this is my city, Darbhanga, the land of my mother, Mithila! The whole of Bihar has respected me for five years, but today, in my own birthplace, demons have dared to insult me. I’m not afraid,” she wrote.
pic.twitter.com/x5DJmEcqnr

In the video accompanying her post, Choudhary accused local BJP MLA Sanjay Sarawagi’s supporters of attacking her party workers. The caption read: “The goons of local MLA Sanjay Sarawagi attacked our workers and, fearing defeat, beat them fearlessly in front of the MLA. They sat back and watched the spectacle, arguing back. This is the respect Mithila and her daughter deserve in Bihar’s gangsterism.”
Sanjay Sarawagi, a five-time MLA from Darbhanga, is preparing to contest the upcoming assembly election for a sixth term. The incident has drawn widespread attention on social media, intensifying the political battle in the region.
pic.twitter.com/85gflM4L0p

A Rising Political Figure
Choudhary, 38, is the daughter of former JD(U) MLA Vinod Kumar Choudhary and granddaughter of Professor Umakant Choudhary, a founding member of the Samata Party and close associate of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. She studied in Darbhanga before pursuing higher education in Pune and the UK, earning a master’s in Development Studies from the University of Sussex and a master’s in Public Administration from the London School of Economics. Prior to entering politics, she worked as a consultant in Bihar’s tourism and health departments.
She founded The Plurals Party in March 2020, positioning herself as a young leader seeking to challenge Bihar’s traditional caste- and religion-based politics. In her 2020 campaign, she declared herself her party’s chief ministerial candidate and pledged to focus on development over identity politics. The party contested 148 seats in the 2020 elections but failed to secure any victories.
Choudhary is contesting the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections from Darbhanga, aiming to introduce a “new kind of politics” that transcends caste and religious divisions.
