Patna: The process to build a high-speed road corridor connecting Raiganj in West Bengal to Kishanganj in Bihar via Barsoi has formally begun, with authorities initiating a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed national highway. The project is being positioned as a major infrastructure push for the region, which has long faced connectivity challenges.
According to officials, the DPR will cover both the Raiganj–Barsoi stretch and the Barsoi–Mor Gram route in Kishanganj district. Once completed, the highway is expected to create a direct and faster link between West Bengal and Bihar, improving regional mobility while supporting trade and employment opportunities in the border districts.
The proposal follows sustained lobbying by Raiganj MP Kartik Chandra Pal, who had repeatedly raised the demand for a modern highway connection. A formal communication from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) confirming the initiation of the project has also been shared with the MP, prompting a positive response from local stakeholders and residents.
A key component of the corridor is the construction of a bridge over the Kulik river between Raiganj and Barsoi. Residents near Kachna station, particularly around Vahin Ghat, have long demanded a permanent road bridge to replace seasonal and unreliable crossings, and the project now appears to be moving towards realisation.
Local communities and businesses have welcomed the announcement, saying the corridor could significantly reduce travel time and transport costs while unlocking new economic opportunities for Barsoi, Raiganj and Kishanganj. Many residents described the initiative as a historic step and expressed gratitude to the central government for advancing the long-pending infrastructure project.
