Patna: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for rain in 13 districts of Bihar on Thursday, September 18, with several areas likely to experience cloudy weather, rain and thunderstorms.
Patna, Gaya, Sheikhpura, Jehanabad, Buxar and Bhojpur are among the districts where cloudy conditions and spells of heavy rain are possible. Weather is expected to remain comparatively normal in other parts of the state.
Light rain or drizzle may occur in some areas of Nalanda, Nawada, Rohtas, Kaimur, Aurangabad, Arwal and Vaishali districts. Meanwhile, humid conditions are likely to persist across most parts of Bihar.
During the past 24 hours, cloudy conditions prevailed in several districts, including Patna, while some areas received significant rainfall.
Bihar records 36% rainfall deficit
Bihar has recorded around 36% less rainfall than normal during the ongoing monsoon season. Against the normal rainfall of 906.2 mm for the period, the state has received 581.6 mm so far, leaving a deficit of around 324.6 mm.
Rainfall of 58 mm was recorded in Begusarai, 53 mm in Buxar, 33 mm in Siwan, 32 mm in Gaya and 22 mm in Patna.
However, rainfall has not been evenly distributed across the state. Several districts continue to experience heat and humidity due to lower rainfall.
At the same time, flooding has affected around 50 lakh people across Bihar so far, according to the figures provided.
Bihar weather forecast for September 18-23
Rain and thunderstorm activity may continue in Bihar on September 18. From September 19, there is no widespread weather warning for the state, although localised rainfall may continue in some areas.
In Patna, rain or thunderstorms are likely to continue until September 19. Scattered rainfall may also occur between September 21 and 23.
The IMD has also indicated the possibility of a new low-pressure area developing over the Andaman Sea and adjoining areas around September 19. Its formation and subsequent movement could bring changes in weather activity over the region.
Patna weather today
Patna is likely to experience partly cloudy skies with one or two spells of rain or thunderstorms on Thursday. The maximum temperature is expected to remain around 34-35 degrees Celsius.
Partly cloudy conditions and rain are also likely on Friday, September 19, with the possibility of rain or thunderstorms continuing. On September 20, mainly partly cloudy conditions are expected.
Why is the humidity so high?
According to the weather department, humidity tends to increase after rainfall. When sunshine returns during the day, the surface heats up while moisture remains trapped in the atmosphere.
As a result, sweat does not evaporate as easily from the body. This can make people feel hotter and more uncomfortable even when the actual temperature is not exceptionally high.
Several parts of Bihar are currently experiencing similar hot and humid conditions.
