Patna: Rajgir is strengthening its position as a major eco-tourism destination in Bihar as authorities seek to link tourism with local employment while protecting the region’s natural resources.
The Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has been promoting Rajgir’s natural attractions, including its forested hills, hot springs, Ghoda Katora, ropeway and Nature Safari.
According to departmental data, 24,55,255 tourists visited Rajgir between January and November 2025. Of these, 2,337,383 were domestic tourists and 117,872 were foreign visitors.
Rajgir’s Five Hills And Natural Landscape
Nestled among five hills — Vaibhavgiri, Vipulachal, Ratnagiri, Udaygiri and Swarnagiri — Rajgir offers a combination of natural, religious and historical attractions.
The region’s hills and green landscapes have become popular among visitors seeking outdoor and nature-based experiences.
Rajgir’s hot springs remain an important attraction, drawing visitors for both religious and tourism-related reasons. Ghoda Katora is also popular for its greenery, natural surroundings and relatively tranquil setting.
Ropeway And Nature Safari Expand Tourism Options
The Rajgir ropeway has emerged as another major attraction, giving visitors an elevated view of the surrounding hills and landscape.
The Nature Safari has further expanded Rajgir’s appeal as a destination for adventure and eco-tourism, adding outdoor activities to its existing religious and historical attractions.
Tourism Creates Local Economic Opportunities
The expansion of tourism is also generating employment and income opportunities for local communities.
Local guides, vehicle operators, hotels, restaurants, catering businesses, handicraft sellers and producers of local goods are among those benefiting from increased tourist activity.
The Environment, Forest and Climate Change department has said its focus is not limited to increasing visitor numbers. It also aims to involve local communities in tourism activities while ensuring the conservation of natural resources.
The approach is intended to support sustainable tourism and strengthen Rajgir’s position as a destination combining nature, adventure, history and local culture.
