Nawada: A visually impaired youth from Bihar’s Nawada district has achieved a remarkable milestone in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination, securing All India Rank 20 in his first attempt. Raviraj, a resident of Mahuli village in Akbarpur block, has credited his success largely to the unwavering support of his mother.
Unable to see since childhood, Raviraj faced challenges that required far greater effort than most aspirants. Despite the difficulties, he remained determined in his pursuit of a career in the civil services. His mother, Vibha Sinha, played a crucial role in his preparation by helping him study regularly and ensuring he stayed focused on his goal.
During his preparation, Raviraj would study topics while his mother repeated and explained the material aloud so that he could memorise and understand it. Whenever he lost focus or felt discouraged, she guided him back on track. According to family members, this daily effort and dedication from both mother and son helped him steadily move closer to success.
Born into a farmer’s family, Raviraj had earlier demonstrated his academic ability by clearing the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) examination, where he was selected as a revenue officer and emerged as a district topper. Building on that achievement, he continued his preparation and eventually secured the 20th rank in the highly competitive UPSC examination.
Raviraj completed his schooling at Dayal Public School and later studied at Satyendra Narayan Singh Inter School for his intermediate education. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science from Sitaram Sahu College. Speaking about his preparation, he said he studied at home for eight to ten hours every day and felt extremely happy to achieve success in his first attempt.
News of his achievement has brought celebrations in his village and the surrounding panchayat. Residents say it is the first time someone from the area has secured such a high rank in the civil services examination. His parents, Vibha Sinha and Ranjan Kumar Sinha, expressed immense pride and happiness over their son’s accomplishment.
Raviraj currently lives in a rented house in the Naveen Nagar locality of Nawada, although he is presently outside the district. He confirmed his All India Rank during a phone conversation.
His story has also highlighted the possibilities for visually impaired aspirants preparing for competitive examinations. With the help of assistive technologies such as screen reader software, Braille books and digital study resources, many visually impaired candidates are now able to pursue their goals and compete on equal footing.
