Raxaul: Raxaul could soon emerge as a centre for aero sports and regional aviation, following a feasibility inspection by officials exploring plans for paragliding, skydiving and other activities alongside the development of a commercial airport.
A five-member team led by Arvind Badoni, general secretary of the Aero Club of India, visited the town to assess the viability of aviation operations and related infrastructure. The team held discussions with local revenue authorities and reviewed land availability for the proposed airport project.
Officials said the land acquisition process, initiated after a request from the Airports Authority of India, is currently under way with state government approval. After inspecting the existing airstrip, Badoni indicated that Raxaul has the potential to host not only regular flight operations but also a range of aero sports and possibly a flying training institute.
He said the availability of land near the proposed airport site could support its development into a “model airport” for the state. Plans under consideration include activities such as paragliding, skydiving, paramotoring and hot air ballooning.
Located on the India–Nepal border, Raxaul could attract visitors from both countries, potentially boosting cross-border tourism and local economic activity. Officials involved in the inspection expressed confidence that the town could soon feature on India’s aviation map.
The team also inspected nearby airstrips in Valmikinagar and Muzaffarpur, with similar studies expected to be conducted in Madhubani and Supaul to evaluate broader regional aviation opportunities.
The Bihar government is currently overseeing land acquisition for the Raxaul airport project, which is expected to be completed in the near future. Around 139 acres of land are being acquired at an estimated cost of Rs 208 crore to facilitate runway expansion, enabling the airport to handle larger aircraft.
The project has been included in the central government’s UDAN 5.2 regional connectivity scheme, with bids for flight operations already received. Earlier proposals include extending the runway to 2,360 metres and constructing a new terminal building.
If realised, the combined development of commercial aviation, aero sports facilities and a flying institute could significantly enhance connectivity and tourism in the region, while positioning Raxaul as a new hub for aviation-linked activities in eastern India.
