Patna: The growing dependence on mobile phones, televisions, and other digital devices is emerging as a significant challenge to children’s overall development, with health experts warning of serious long-term consequences if the trend continues unchecked.

Experts say changing lifestyles, busy parental schedules, and declining participation in outdoor activities have led many children to spend an increasing amount of time in front of screens. As a result, concerns are mounting over the impact on their physical health, mental wellbeing, communication abilities, and social development.

Communication and Learning Skills Affected

According to child health specialists, many children are becoming increasingly reliant on screens for entertainment and even routine activities such as eating meals. This dependence is gradually reducing opportunities for interaction with family members, friends, and peers.

Experts note that children who once spent considerable time playing outdoors, learning through social engagement, and interacting with family members are now spending a significant portion of their day on digital devices. The effects are becoming visible in their behaviour, language development, communication skills, and learning abilities.

Growing Concerns Over Mental Health

Health professionals warn that excessive screen exposure is contributing to a rise in mental health challenges among children. Anxiety, stress, sleep disturbances, irritability, and symptoms associated with depression are increasingly being observed among children who spend prolonged periods using mobile phones and watching television.

Experts emphasise that ensuring children’s healthy development extends beyond treating illnesses and includes supporting their emotional, social, and cognitive growth. They stress the need for greater awareness among parents and communities regarding responsible screen use.

Social Development Under Pressure

Mental health specialists say uncontrolled use of mobile phones and social media is becoming a barrier to healthy social development. While digital devices have become a part of daily life, experts caution that excessive exposure can limit children’s ability to interact with others and develop essential social skills.

Children who spend most of their free time on screens may have fewer opportunities to participate in group activities, engage in conversations, and build interpersonal relationships. Experts warn that this can contribute to feelings of social isolation, nervousness, and difficulty adapting to social situations.

Mobile Use During Meals Raises Additional Concerns

Experts also highlight the growing habit of children using mobile phones while eating. They say that when a child’s attention remains focused on a screen during meals, they become less aware of the food they are consuming and may miss important sensory and behavioural aspects of healthy eating.

This pattern can affect eating habits and reduce opportunities for interaction with family members during mealtimes.

Key Areas of Development Being Impacted

According to experts, excessive screen time is contributing to several developmental challenges, including:

  • Reduced communication skills
  • Weakening social interaction abilities
  • Declining negotiation and problem-solving skills
  • Emotional imbalance and psychological distress

Impact on Sleep, Vision and Academic Performance

Health professionals report that increasing screen exposure is also affecting children’s sleep patterns, eyesight, and academic outcomes.

Late-night use of mobile phones is contributing to sleep-related problems, which can affect concentration and learning. Experts say inadequate sleep often leads to reduced attention spans and difficulties in academic performance.

Extended screen use is also associated with eye strain, headaches, and other physical health concerns, while prolonged exposure may negatively influence children’s ability to focus on studies and retain information.

Setting Limits Remains Key

Experts acknowledge that completely eliminating digital devices from children’s lives is neither practical nor realistic. Instead, they recommend establishing clear rules and time limits for screen use.

Parents are encouraged to promote outdoor activities, sports, reading, creative hobbies, and family interaction as alternatives to prolonged screen exposure. Creating a balanced routine, experts say, can help children develop healthier habits while still benefiting from technology.

They caution that without timely intervention, the impact of excessive screen time on children’s mental and physical wellbeing could become a more significant public health concern in the years ahead.
