Patna: Bihar Transport Department will introduce road safety lessons in textbooks for Classes 11 and 12 from 2027, expanding its school-based awareness programme aimed at reducing road accidents across the state.
The department has prepared the curriculum content, and the printing process is underway, according to an official statement. The revised textbooks are expected to be introduced from the 2027 academic session.
Road Safety Education Expanded
The department currently provides road safety education to students from Classes 3 to 10. The lessons cover pedestrian safety, traffic signals, lane discipline, the dangers of overspeeding, avoiding drunk driving and mobile phone use while driving, assisting accident victims, and following road signs.
With the new initiative, road safety education will now extend to senior secondary students, allowing them to receive more comprehensive instruction before they become eligible to drive.
Wider Awareness Campaign
Alongside the school curriculum, the Transport Department is conducting awareness programmes for drivers, conductors and police personnel.
The training focuses on traffic regulations, safe driving practices, modern vehicle technologies and the appropriate response following road accidents. The department said these efforts are intended to improve compliance with road safety norms among all road users.
Awareness Key To Reducing Accidents
Transport Department Secretary Raj Kumar said road accidents are not only unfortunate incidents but are also often linked to a lack of awareness.
He said the department aims to ensure children learn road safety rules, understand traffic signals and develop safe road habits from an early age. According to him, increasing awareness among young people will help reduce road accidents in Bihar over time.
Raj Kumar added that the initiative is intended to encourage students to become responsible citizens while contributing to safer roads across the state.
