Patna: Rohini Acharya, the daughter of former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad and a kidney donor to him, has publicly severed ties with both her family and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) following the party’s crushing defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections. In an emotional post on social media on Sunday, she described being forced out of her maternal home, writing: “I was made an orphan. I left home crying. They picked up slippers to hit me.”

Rohini’s statement came amid rising tensions within the Lalu family over Sanjay Yadav, a close aide to Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, RJD president and Lalu’s elder son. She accused Sanjay and another associate, Rameez, of exerting undue influence over party affairs and of intimidating her: “Now ask these questions to Tejashwi Yadav. If you ask, you will be abused and hit with slippers,” she wrote.

Earlier, speaking to reporters at Patna airport on Saturday, Rohini said, “I have no family. They are the ones who expelled me from the family.” Her public distancing underscores the growing internal strife within the RJD, which won only 25 seats in the recent election, down from 75 in 2020. Tej Pratap Yadav, Lalu’s elder son, lost by nearly 50,000 votes, while Tejashwi narrowly retained his seat.
Rohini’s break with the family echoes the earlier expulsion of Tej Pratap Yadav in May, an action he blamed on Sanjay Yadav. She revealed that Sanjay and Rameez directed her actions within the party and added that she was taking “all the blame” for decisions imposed on her. Following her statements, Rohini unfollowed all family members and party accounts on social media, signalling a complete severance.

Sanjay Yadav, a Rajya Sabha MP and Tejashwi’s strategic advisor, is believed to wield significant control over party decisions. Political analysts note that he has been instrumental in shaping electoral strategies, digital campaigns, and policy directions within the RJD. Rameez, a Balrampur-based political operative with a controversial criminal background, manages the party’s social media and election operations.
The internal discord within the Lalu family has deep roots. Tensions surfaced publicly in September when Rohini shared posts critical of Sanjay Yadav’s prominence in party affairs and subsequently unfollowed all family members and the RJD on social media. Tej Pratap has repeatedly criticised Sanjay, referring to him as “Jaichand” and claiming he has weakened the RJD.
Political observers say that the Lalu family’s internal disputes, coupled with the RJD’s electoral losses, highlight a shift in Bihar’s political landscape. Rohini’s departure from both the family and the party not only signals personal estrangement but also reflects broader concerns about the concentration of power among close aides in the party’s leadership circle.
